What is Tiramisu?

The classic Tiramisu recipe is a coffee-flavored Italian dessert. Ladyfingers are delicate cookies dipped in espresso or robust coffee, layered with a whipped mixture of mascarpone, eggs, and sugar.

Translated, “Tiramisu” means “pick me up.” In Italy, in mid- to late afternoon, due to the late dinner, children are given a small dessert to carry to dinner without compromising their dinner appetite.

Thus, the name tiramisu.

What Coffee to use?

One critical ingredient is coffee. A vibrant and strong coffee works best for the savoiardi cookies.

I only drink espresso by Lavazza prepared in my Bialetti Espresso Maker. It is my favorite. It is rich and full-bodied. I do not expect you to go out and buy one.

Therefore, make your favorite coffee very strong for this recipe.

Nescafé granules can be used in this recipe. Limit the amount of water to make the coffee strong.

What is Pumpkin pie spice made of?

A wonderful aromatic blend of cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and nutmeg.

You can have a store-bought jar. Or, as I have it here, you can make your own. I always choose the latter.

At the beginning of every season, I make a fresh batch of pumpkin pie spice for all my fall baking. Easy to have on hand when needed.

Because I can reach it faster there, I use it more often in all my fall desserts.

The best thing is that it makes almost 2.5 tablespoons of great spice that you can store in a glass jar and use anytime during the holidays.

The perfect balance between cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and clove.

I see some fantastic pumpkin bread and pumpkin-spiced latte in the near future.

Here are a few helpful tips for the ingredients needed to make this easy Tiramisu recipe.

This is a short introduction. The ingredient list is also brief. It includes essential items that you may already have in your pantry. Please read the recipe for complete instructions.

Savoiardi: Only buy Italian. They are the best. The link is below for the one I recommend and only use.

Pumpkin Spice – as per my instructions below, pass it through a small sieve to remove any chunks that may have formed.

Pumpkin puree – If you do not plan to use it all, buy a small can. Most noteworthy, pumpkin puree will not store well in the refrigerator for several days.

Mascarpone cheese is an Italian creamy cheese that is a staple of tiramisu. Added with the heavy cream and the pumpkin puree, it helps create a beautiful dessert.

Heavy cream creates the richness of this tiramisu recipe. While beating, it solidifies and becomes creamy.

Turbinado sugar – derived from sugar cane- brings caramel flavor to your dessert.

Espresso coffee – The more robust, the better. You want that rich coffee with your savoiardi cookie to balance off the pumpkin cream.

White chocolate – shaving for decoration. This adds a layer of depth to your pumpkin tiramisu.

Step-by-step instructions to make this fantastic pumpkin dessert recipe

  • Make your pie spice first.
  • Make the espresso coffee and add the sugar. Stir until the sugar is melted and set aside. It must be cooled.
  • While the coffee is brewing, prepare the pumpkin mascarpone mixture by mixing the heavy cream, mascarpone, pumpkin puree, and half of the spices. You should have a whipped cream consistency.
  • When working with the above in your mixer, start at a low setting. The liquid will splatter all around you. Increase as you go.
  • Whisk the remaining heavy cream in a separate bowl until stiff peaks are formed. Do not over-whip. Set aside.

Assembling

Now that you have all the ingredients prepared it is time to assemble your dessert.

This will go fast; do not worry if it does not look uniform. Your cream and savoiardi will move around and settle, so perfection is not required.

  • Dip your savoiardi in the coffee and line the bottom of your glass or container of choice.
  • Add a healthy spoonful of the mascarpone mixture. Add another layer of coffee-soaked savoiardi and another layer of the mascarpone mixture.
  • Finish up with a dollop or more of whipped cream.
  • White chocolate shaving.

Grab a spoon and enjoy!

What is the difference between a pumpkin spice recipe and a pumpkin pie spice?

This is a very often asked question. Neither of them contains pumpkin.

It is, however, the blend of spices usually found in pumpkin pie recipes.

Pumpkin spice, or pumpkin pie spice, is a mixture of cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, allspice, and cloves.

Substitutes and suggestions

  • The white chocolate shavings add another fun touch to this pumpkin tiramisu recipe. They are optional if you do not have them on hand.
  • A light dust of cocoa powder is also fun to add. Be delicate with it.
  • You can add Amaretto di Saronno to the coffee to give it a more Italian flair or rum for a Caribbean twist, but I leave that up to you.
  • I have replaced the turbinado sugar with white sugar, and it works great, too, so there is no need for a memorable trip to the store if you forget them or have none on hand.

Serve it in small glasses for a dramatic presentation, ramekins, or a rectangular dish.

Your new Pumpkin Tiramisu will be a hit with everyone at any time of the year.

Storage

Store: Your wonderful dessert can be stored in an airtight glass container for up to two days. I will not keep it longer as the savoiardi cookie will break down too much.

Make ahead: You can prepare the pumpkin spice at any time and store it in a jar for all your baking needs during the season.

Make your cream mixture the night before if you wish.
